For fifty years, the firm of MJM+A Architects has been shaped by a simple yet powerful idea: that thoughtful design has the ability to elevate communities, inspire people, and stand the test of time. What began as a sole proprietorship—driven by vision, grit, and a commitment to excellence as personified by our inimitable leader, Michael J. Macaluso, AIA, FARA—has grown into a dynamic partnership defined by collaboration, innovation, and enduring relationships.

Our story began with its roots in Queens, New York, where projects were imagined and brought to life using traditional drafting tables, pencils, and hand-rendered plans. Those early days—marked by craftsmanship, precision, and a deeply personal approach to design—laid the foundation for everything that followed. Today, we have grown into expanded, high-tech offices in midtown New York City, where advanced tools and technologies enhance our capabilities while preserving the same attention to detail and design integrity that defined our beginnings.

As we celebrate this milestone anniversary year, we also mark a pivotal evolution in our history. Our transition to a Design Professional Corporation reflects not only our growth, but our shared investment in the future. This next chapter is strengthened by an expanded leadership team whose experience and dedication embody the values that have guided us for five decades.

We are proud to recognize Ryan Scipione, AIA, Principal, as he celebrates 25 years with the firm. Ryan’s leadership, creativity, and deep understanding of the construction process have helped shape countless projects and client partnerships. His contributions reflect the continuity and forward-thinking approach that define who we are today.

Equally significant is the recognition of Debra Nicholson, CFO, whose recent transition into ownership marks a meaningful moment in our evolution. Debra’s stewardship has long been instrumental in guiding the firm’s financial strength and operational excellence. Her new role as an owner underscores our commitment to inclusive leadership and long-term sustainability.

We also celebrate Valerie Costa’s role as an Associate, representing the next generation of leadership within the firm. Valerie’s talent, perspective, and dedication to design excellence signal a bright and promising future as we continue to grow and adapt in an ever-changing industry.

Over the past fifty years, our work has spanned a diverse range of project types across the five boroughs and beyond—each one an opportunity to create spaces that are both functional and inspiring. Along the way, we have been honored with numerous national and local awards and accolades, but our greatest achievement remains the trust we have earned from our clients and the communities we serve.

Central to our success is our spirit of collaboration, both within our team and with our valued partners. Our ongoing relationship with our sister code-consulting/expediting company, Oculus Consulting, exemplifies this approach. Led by long-time team member John Scheschareg, FARA, Oculus Consulting extends our capabilities and reinforces our shared commitment to delivering integrated, high-quality solutions.
